Should I use the country-code dropdown or type the full number myself?

The rule in one line: if you have a local number such as 050 from a country in the list, use the helper; if the number already carries + or 00, or its country is not listed, choose 'The number I type includes the country code' and paste it whole. Mixing the two methods causes most of the mistakes.

What the helper actually does

The country-code helper in the WhatsApp link generator does two things only: it removes one leading 0 from what you type, if there is one, and puts the chosen country code in front. It does not read the number to work out its country, and it does not check whether a code typed inside the box matches the one you picked. So it is excellent at a single job: turning a local number into an international one.

When to use the helper

  • The number is local with its 0, such as a Saudi 0501234567 or an Emirati 050 123 4567, and the country is in the list.
  • The number is a local one with no 0 from Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain or Oman. The helper adds the code and removes nothing.
  • You are copying lots of numbers off a local order sheet: choose the country once and paste each number as it is.

When to type the full number

  • The number comes from somewhere that already writes it internationally, such as +971 50 123 4567 or 00971501234567. You do not need the helper: the tool strips the + or 00 and keeps the rest.
  • The number's country is not in the list.
  • The country keeps its 0 in the international number. The tool names Italy as an example: a Rome landline is written +39 06 1234 5678 and the 0 belongs to the number. The helper would wrongly remove it, so type it in full to get 390612345678.

What happens when you mix them

Mistake one: you pick the UAE from the list and paste +971501234567. The tool stops and says you picked a country code but the number starts with + or 00, and asks you to type only the local number or change the option. This one is harmless, because the tool blocks it.

Mistake two is worse because it passes silently. You pick the UAE and paste the international number without its +, that is 971501234567. The tool finds no +, no 00 and no 0, so it adds the code a second time: 971971501234567. That is 15 digits, the maximum allowed, so a link is created. The cure is to glance at the 'Number inside the link' line before copying. If the country code appears twice at the start, switch the option.

A quick way to decide

Look at the first character of the number in front of you. A 0? Use the helper. A + or 00? Do not. Digits that begin with the country code but no sign? Do not use it either. An eight-digit Gulf number? Use it. That glance settles most cases, and the line showing the final number catches the rest.

Common questions

Does the site remember the country I picked last time?

No. The tool always starts on 'The number I type includes the country code'. Pick the country each session.

Is there any difference between typing + and typing 00?

Not in the result. The tool removes either one, once, from the start and then checks the remaining digits.
