My booking system wants an api.whatsapp.com/send link; how is that different from wa.me?

Both forms open the same chat with the same number and the same message. The difference is only how they are written: wa.me puts the number in the link's path and the message after ?text=, while api.whatsapp.com/send puts the number in a phone= parameter and the message in &text=. The link generator gives you both from one input; the second sits under 'Alternative api.whatsapp.com form'.

The two forms side by side

We entered an example UAE number and a short English booking message into the WhatsApp link generator, and it gave:

https://wa.me/971501234567?text=Hi%2C%20I%20would%20like%20to%20book%20a%20viewing

https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=971501234567&text=Hi%2C%20I%20would%20like%20to%20book%20a%20viewing

The encoded message is identical, character for character, in both, and so is the number. The first link is 82 characters and the second 104, so the alternative form is always 22 characters longer whatever the message, because the difference lies only in the fixed part.

When you need the alternative form

  • A booking system or store plugin has a field labelled 'api.whatsapp.com link', or rejects wa.me because of the way it validates URLs.
  • A theme or plugin builds the link itself and asks for the number and text in separate fields, where knowing phone= and text= helps you see where each goes.
  • An old file or a manual uses this form and you want a link in the same shape for consistency.

Otherwise use wa.me. It is shorter, easier to read, and has no & between the number and the message, which saves trouble if you put the link inside HTML, where an & sometimes needs special handling.

Where to find it in the tool

  1. Type the number and message as usual.
  2. Below the wa.me link, open the collapsed section 'Alternative api.whatsapp.com form'.
  3. Press 'Copy alternative form'. It works independently of the button that copies the wa.me link.

Both forms update together with every change to the number or message, so their content can never drift apart. The tool's QR code is always built from the shorter wa.me link. If you need a code for the alternative form, copy it and make its code in the QR code generator.

With no message

Leave the message empty and the tool drops the text part from both forms: wa.me is just 26 characters, and the alternative, https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=971501234567, is 48. No empty &text= is left dangling at the end.

Common questions

Is one form more reliable than the other?

Both open the same chat. The tool does not favour either in the result, but it shows wa.me first because it is shorter and better for sharing.

Does an Arabic message differ between the two forms?

No. The same encoding goes into both. «مرحبًا، أريد حجز معاينة» gives a 161-character wa.me link and a 183-character alternative, the usual 22-character gap.
