How to use it
- Enter monthly take-home income.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Needs = income × 0.50, wants = income × 0.30, savings = income × 0.20, and yearly savings = monthly savings × 12.
Example
Inputs: Monthly take-home income = 12,000. Result: Needs (50%): 6,000.00; Wants (30%): 3,600.00; Savings and debt (20%): 2,400.00.
Limits and caveats
- The rule is a guideline, and 50% may not cover needs in cities with high rent.
- Use net pay after deductions, not gross salary.
Questions about this tool
What counts as needs?
Costs you cannot skip: housing, bills, basic groceries, transport and required minimum loan payments.
Where do loan payments go?
The minimum payment is a need. Anything you pay above it to clear the debt faster belongs in the 20%.
What if my needs are above 50%?
Trim wants first to protect saving, or look for ways to cut the largest fixed cost, such as rent.
