How it is calculated

FIRE number = annual spending ÷ withdrawal rate. At 4% this is 25 times annual spending, where annual spending = monthly × 12.

Example

Inputs: Expected monthly spending = 15,000, Annual withdrawal rate = 4 %. Result: FIRE number: 4,500,000.00; Annual spending: 180,000.00; Multiple of annual spending: 25 ×.

Limits and caveats

  • The 4% figure comes from studies of historical US markets over roughly 30 year retirements and is not a guarantee.
  • For a very early retirement many people choose a lower rate such as 3% to 3.5%.

Questions about this tool

Where does the 4% rule come from?

From historical studies, the most cited being the Trinity study, which found a 4% first year withdrawal raised with inflation held up in most 30 year periods.

Should I use current or retirement spending?

Use what you expect to spend after you stop working, and add costs that may rise, such as health insurance and travel.

Does my home count toward the FIRE number?

No, the number covers assets you draw from. A paid off home only lowers your spending.
