How to use it
- Enter current savings, monthly withdrawal and annual return on the balance.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Months n = −ln(1 − B × r ÷ W) ÷ ln(1 + r), where B is the balance, W the end of month withdrawal and r the annual return ÷ 12. If W ≤ B × r the balance never runs out. With no return n = B ÷ W.
Example
Inputs: Current savings = 1,000,000, Monthly withdrawal = 8,000, Annual return on the balance = 4 %. Result: How long savings last: 13.5 years; Number of months: 162 months; Total withdrawn: 1,295,746.39.
Limits and caveats
- The withdrawal stays flat and does not rise with inflation, so its buying power falls over the years.
- The return is fixed, while real returns vary and early losses can shorten the time.
Questions about this tool
Why does it say the money never runs out?
Your monthly return on the balance equals or exceeds the monthly withdrawal, so the principal stays the same or grows.
Is the withdrawal at the start or end of the month?
The calculator assumes the end of each month, after that month's return is added.
How do I allow for inflation?
Enter a real return, the expected return minus inflation, and the result approximates a withdrawal that keeps its buying power.
