Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.
How to use it
- Enter number, from base and to base.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Two steps: value = sum of (digit × input base^position), then repeated division of that value by the output base, reading the remainders from last to first. Digits above 9 use the letters A to Z.
Example
Inputs: Number = 255, From base = Base 10 (decimal), To base = Base 16 (hexadecimal). Result: Result in base 16: FF; Digits in the result: 2.
255
FF
Limits and caveats
- Whole numbers up to 1000 digits. For fractions use the fractional base converter.
- The all-bases table appears for values up to 128 bits.
Questions about this tool
How do I convert between two non-decimal bases?
The general method is to go through decimal first and then to the target base, which is what the tool does. For example 777 in octal is 511, which is 200221 in ternary.
Why does it stop at base 36?
Ten digits plus 26 Latin letters give only 36 symbols. Larger bases such as 60 need each place written as a separate number.
Is it case-sensitive?
No. ff and FF are the same in hexadecimal, and the result is always written in uppercase.
