- Enter number.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
For 4000 and above: thousands = floor(n ÷ 1000) is written in Roman numerals with an overline on every symbol, followed by the remainder (n mod 1000) in plain symbols.
Example
Inputs: Number = 2,026,000. Result: Roman numeral: M̅M̅X̅X̅V̅I̅; Overlined part (× 1000): MMXXVI = 2026 × 1000; Plain part: none.
Limits and caveats
- The overline is a Unicode combining mark (U+0305) and may look slightly offset in some fonts.
- Conventions vary: some write the thousands unit as M instead of I̅; both equal 1000.
Questions about this tool
What does a bar over a Roman numeral mean?
It multiplies the symbol by 1000, so X̅ is 10,000 and M̅ is one million.
How is 5000 written in Roman numerals?
It is V̅, that is 5 × 1000.
Why is the bar not used below 4000?
Numbers up to 3999 fit the plain symbols, such as MMMCMXCIX, so no bar is needed.
