Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.
How to use it
- Enter number.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
The number is split into thousands, hundreds, tens and units, and each place is written with M=1000, D=500, C=100, L=50, X=10, V=5, I=1, using the subtractive pairs CM=900, CD=400, XC=90, XL=40, IX=9 and IV=4.
Example
Inputs: Number = 1,994. Result: Roman numeral: MCMXCIV.
Limits and caveats
- Standard Roman numerals have no zero and stop at 3999; use the vinculum tool for larger numbers.
- The output is the standard form, so 4 is IV, not the IIII seen on some clock faces.
Questions about this tool
Why does the converter stop at 3999?
The largest symbol is M (1000) and a symbol may repeat at most three times, so the largest standard numeral is MMMCMXCIX.
How is 2026 written in Roman numerals?
It is MMXXVI, that is 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1.
When is a smaller symbol subtracted?
Only I before V or X, X before L or C, and C before D or M, as in IV = 4, XC = 90 and CM = 900.
