How it is calculated
ROI = (final value - amount invested) ÷ amount invested × 100. Annualized return = ((final value ÷ amount invested)^(1 ÷ years) - 1) × 100.
Example
Inputs: Amount invested = 10,000, Final value = 12,500, Holding period (optional) = 2 years. Result: ROI: 25%; Net profit or loss: 2,500.00; Annualized return: 11.8%.
Limits and caveats
- Inflation and taxes are not included.
- It assumes one amount invested at the start; repeated deposits need the IRR calculator.
Questions about this tool
What is the difference between ROI and annualized return?
ROI is the total gain over the whole period, while the annualized return spreads it over the years with compounding. A 25% gain over two years is about 11.8% a year.
Should I include dividends and fees?
Yes. Add any dividends you received to the final value, and add commissions and fees to the amount invested.
Can ROI be negative?
Yes, when the final value is below the amount invested. The largest possible loss is -100%, when the whole amount is gone.
