Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter number, multiple (e.g. 5, 10 or 0.05) and rounding direction.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Result = multiple × q, where q is the number divided by the multiple, rounded to the nearest (ties away from zero), up or down.

Example

Inputs: Number = 1234.56, Multiple (e.g. 5, 10 or 0.05) = 5, Rounding direction = To the nearest. Result: Rounded: 1235.

1234.56
1235

Limits and caveats

  • In nearest mode a tie goes away from zero, so 7.5 becomes 10 and -7.5 becomes -10.
  • Up means toward positive infinity and down toward negative infinity, including for negative numbers.

Questions about this tool

How do I round 1234.56 to the nearest 5?

1234.56 ÷ 5 = 246.912, the nearest whole number is 247, and 247 × 5 = 1235.

How do I round a price to the nearest 0.25?

Type 0.25 as the multiple, so 1.23 becomes 1.25, for example.

What is the difference between rounding up and rounding to the nearest?

Up always takes the next multiple unless the number is already one, so 1201 becomes 1300 to the hundred, while nearest gives 1200.
