How it is calculated
The amount is split into Egyptian pounds and piastres (1 pound = 100 piastres). Each part is written in words, and the counted noun takes the form set by the last two digits: 1 جنيه واحد, 2 جنيهان, 3 to 10 جنيهات, 11 to 99 جنيهًا, and round hundreds and thousands جنيه.
Example
Inputs: Amount in EGP = 21.21. Result: Amount in Arabic words: واحد وعشرون جنيهًا مصريًا وواحد وعشرون قرشًا; Cheque wording: فقط واحد وعشرون جنيهًا مصريًا وواحد وعشرون قرشًا لا غير; Amount in English: Twenty-one Egyptian pounds and twenty-one piastres.
Limits and caveats
- For amounts above 100 that end in 1 or 2, such as 101, we follow the common tafqeet form «مئة وواحد جنيه».
- We spell مئة the modern way; مائة is the older spelling of the same word. Up to 15 digits before the decimal point and 2 after it.
Questions about this tool
How many piastres are in an Egyptian pound?
One pound is 100 piastres, so 21.21 means 21 pounds and 21 piastres.
Why جنيه مصري واحد and not واحد جنيه?
In Arabic the number one follows the noun as an adjective, so it is جنيه واحد, and two is simply جنيهان.
Can I write millimes?
The millime, a thousandth of a pound, is no longer in use, so the tool takes two decimals for piastres only.
