Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.
How to use it
- Enter number and decimal places.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Keep the places you want and drop the rest without looking at it, so the result always moves toward zero: 2.999 to 2 places = 2.99.
Example
Inputs: Number = 3.14159, Decimal places = 2. Result: Truncated: 3.14.
3.14159
3.14
Limits and caveats
- Truncation goes toward zero, so -7.869 becomes -7.8, not -7.9 as FLOOR would give.
- Up to 20 decimal places.
Questions about this tool
What is the difference between truncating and rounding?
Rounding looks at the next digit and may raise the last place. Truncating just drops the rest, so 2.999 gives 2.99 instead of 3.00.
Is truncation the same as rounding down?
For positive numbers yes. For negative numbers truncation moves toward zero while rounding down moves away from it.
How do I truncate to a whole number?
Choose 0 decimal places, so 9.99 becomes 9 and -9.99 becomes -9.
