How to use it

- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
The year is split into its first two and last two digits, each read as a number. If the last two are 00 we say hundred; from 01 to 09 we say oh and the digit. Years 2001 to 2009 and whole thousands are read in full: two thousand five.
Example
Inputs: Year = 1,999. Result: Year as spoken: nineteen ninety-nine; Full cardinal: one thousand nine hundred ninety-nine.
Limits and caveats
- Other readings are also accepted, such as two thousand ten for twenty ten; we show the most common one plus the full number.
- Years below 1000 are written as a plain cardinal.
Questions about this tool
Why is 2005 read two thousand five?
That is the usual reading for 2001 to 2009. From 2010 on, reading in pairs such as twenty ten is more common.
What does oh mean in nineteen oh-five?
Oh replaces zero when the last two digits are 01 to 09, so 1905 is nineteen oh-five.
Should years be spelled out in formal documents?
Rarely. Years are normally written in digits; words help in scripts and at the start of a sentence.
