How do I add a clickable WhatsApp link to my email signature?

Make a wa.me link for your number with the WhatsApp link generator, then add it in the signature builder as one of the social links, with 'WhatsApp' in the 'Shown as' box. In the signature it appears as coloured clickable text, and in the plain-text version as a line reading 'WhatsApp:' followed by the full link.

Why the phone number is not enough

The phone field makes an ordinary call link: tapping it on a phone opens the dialler, not a chat. Plenty of customers in the Gulf would rather message than call, especially to ask about an order or a size. A WhatsApp link saves them copying your number, saving it as a contact and then finding it in the app, while the phone number stays there for anyone who does want to call.

The steps

  1. Open the WhatsApp link generator and enter your number with its country code. For 0501234567 with Saudi code 966, it gives https://wa.me/966501234567.
  2. Optionally add a ready-made message. The link gets much longer because the text is encoded inside it, but the link box in the signature builder has room for it.
  3. Open the Email signature builder, and in 'Social links' type WhatsApp in 'Shown as' and paste the address into 'Link'.
  4. Check the preview: WhatsApp appears in your accent colour, next to your other links with a faint vertical bar between them.

The tool accepts the link with or without https at the front, so typing just wa.me/966501234567 works and https:// is added for you. Any link that is not http or https is rejected with a message naming its row.

What it looks like in both versions

Take an Arabic signature for a shop called Al Waha, with +966 50 123 4567 and two links, one to WhatsApp and one to Instagram. The formatted signature shows a single link row reading 'واتساب | Instagram', each word its own link. The plain-text version writes every link out in full on its own line:

  • واتساب: https://wa.me/966501234567
  • Instagram: https://instagram.com/alwaha

That matters because some programs show mail as plain text, and the link then stays visible and can be tapped or copied even with no formatting at all.

Before you rely on it

  • Tap the link on your phone after pasting the signature into your email, and make sure it opens a chat with the right number.
  • If your WhatsApp Business account runs on a different number from your calls, put the call number in the phone field and the WhatsApp number in the link.
  • You can have up to 6 links. One WhatsApp link is usually enough; there is no need to repeat it in Arabic and English, even in the two-language layout.

Common questions

Should the label say WhatsApp or واتساب?

Whatever suits your readers. The label is free text up to 40 characters, and if you leave it empty the tool shows the link itself without https://.

Does the tool check that the number is on WhatsApp?

No. It only checks that the link is http or https and well formed. Test it yourself before customers see it.
