How do I get a still JPG from an animated WebP to use as a thumbnail?
Add the animated WebP to the format converter and choose JPEG or PNG. The tool never keeps animation, so the output is one still image that your browser decodes from the file, normally the first frame. Check in the preview that this frame works as a thumbnail, then resize it if needed.
When you need a still from an animated file
Animated WebP files are common in store promos, sale stickers and small banners. Plenty of places want a still image, though: a product cover, the thumbnail for an article or video, or an upload field on a platform that does not take animation. Here, something that looks like a gap in the tool becomes the point: it does not support animation, so it hands you one clean frame.
Which frame will you get?
The tool draws the image the way your browser decodes it, and decoding an animated file this way normally yields the first frame. The honest limit: you cannot pick a frame from the middle of the animation inside the tool. If the first frame is blank or the start of a faded transition, as happens with some promos that open on a plain color, it will not make a good thumbnail. In that case ask the designer for the frame you want as a still file, or take a screenshot of the right moment while it plays.
Steps
- Open the Image format converter and add the file, for example promo.webp.
- Choose JPEG if the thumbnail will sit on an ordinary background, or PNG if it has transparency you want to keep.
- Look at the preview under the list: it shows the frame that was actually saved.
- Download the file. It will be named promo.jpg.
- If the platform wants specific thumbnail dimensions, set them in the Image resizer.
Size and quality notes
An animated file carries many frames while a still carries one, so the size usually drops clearly, and the row shows you by how much. Because frames in animated promos are sometimes heavily compressed, the still may look softer than you expect when shown large. Converting adds no detail, so if you need a crisp image for a big cover, a still source file from the designer is the better route.
Remember the tool accepts WebP, PNG and JPEG only. Animated GIFs are not supported, so you cannot pull a frame from one here.
Common questions
Can I turn an animated WebP into an animated GIF?
No. The tool outputs JPEG, PNG or WebP, and each is always a single still image.
I chose WebP as the target for an animated WebP and it was left as is. Why?
The file is already WebP, and the tool leaves files that are already in the target format alone. Choose JPEG or PNG to get a still.
