Is it OK to delete a page from a PDF that an official body signed digitally before I forward it?

Technically you can, but the result will not carry a valid signature. The tool builds a new file from the remaining pages, the digital signature does not come with it, and the tool warns you when it detects one. If the recipient will verify the signature, send the complete original.

What a digital signature actually protects

A digital signature is not a picture of a handwritten signature. It is a fingerprint calculated over the file's content at the moment of signing. Any change to that content, even removing one blank page, means the fingerprint no longer matches. The recipient's reader then reports the signature as invalid or missing, which is exactly what the signature exists to reveal.

The Delete PDF pages tool does not edit your original. It copies the remaining pages into a brand new file, and that new file carries no signature at all, not even a broken one. When you open a signed file, the tool shows a notice that it appears to contain a digital signature and that any modification may invalidate it.

When a trimmed copy is enough

  • Someone wants one or two pages just to read, such as the details page of a certificate or letter, and will not rely on it as an official document.
  • You are dropping an extract into a presentation or an internal file for your team.
  • You want a light working copy for yourself while the signed original stays filed away.

When to send the original in full

  • You are submitting the document to someone who will check it, such as a bank, a government office or a party to a contract.
  • The signature itself is the reason the document is accepted.
  • You do not know what the recipient will do with it. The complete original is always the safe choice.

A practical way to do both

If the problem is that the file is long and the recipient needs one page, send both: the extract so it is easy to read, and the complete signed original so they can verify it if needed. Say in your message that the extract is for reference and the original is the document of record.

Worked example

A digitally signed official letter of 6 pages, and only page 1 is needed for reference.

You type 2-6 in the pages field, and the summary reads: Pages to delete: 2-6 (5 of 6). Pages that will remain: 1.

The result is a one-page file with no signature, sent alongside the original, not instead of it.

If the goal is to hide sensitive information on one of the pages, remember the signed original still contains it. In that case ask the issuer for a signed version suited to the purpose, rather than editing a document that should not be edited.

Common questions

Does the tool stop me deleting pages from a signed file?

No, it only warns you. The decision is yours, and the tool is clear that the result will not carry a valid signature.

Is the signed original affected?

No. The original stays on your device with its signature intact, and the tool creates a separate file.
