Your page title and description in search results

When a customer searches for a product like yours, the first thing they see of your store is two lines: the title and the description. Those two lines decide whether they click your result or a competitor's. And you get to write them yourself.

Title and description

The title is what you put in the page's title tag, and the description goes in the meta description tag. A search engine shows the title as the link people click, and the description as text beneath it. A good title names the product clearly, and a good description answers the customer's question: why this page?

Worked example

The title Oud & Bakhoor is written in the code like this, because & is written & inside HTML:

And the link https://example.com/perfumes/oud-oil appears in the preview as a path: example.com › perfumes › oud-oil.

<title>Oud &amp; Bakhoor</title>

How long should they be?

There is no official character count. Search engines cut text by its width in pixels on screen, not by the number of characters. The tool measures the width roughly and compares it with commonly observed widths, around 580 pixels for the title. Put the most important words first, so if the title is cut, what matters still shows.

How to do it

  1. Open the Search snippet preview and type the page title, description and URL.
  2. Check the desktop and mobile preview, the character counts and the approximate widths.
  3. Edit until the title and description show roughly in full.
  4. Copy the ready tags into your page, or into your store platform's search settings fields.

What the tool cannot promise

  • The preview is an illustration in a neutral design, and does not imitate any particular search engine.
  • Search engines may rewrite the title, and may pick other text from the page instead of your description.
  • Nothing in the tool affects how your page ranks, and title length is not a ranking factor in itself.

For how the page looks when shared on WhatsApp and social media, write Open Graph tags with the Open Graph metadata builder. For the link itself, use the URL slug generator.

Common questions

Should I write the title in Arabic or English?

In the language of the page and its audience. An Arabic title makes the preview read right to left.

Why does a different title show than the one I wrote?

Search engines may rewrite titles when they judge that other text describes the page better.

Does the tool open my page?

No, it does not visit the link or check that the page exists.
