Will the clickable website and WhatsApp links in my catalog still work after merging?

Website and WhatsApp links placed on pages normally survive, because they are annotations tied to the page and [[merge-pdf]] copies every page together with its annotations. What can break is a different kind: links that jump to another page inside the same file, and the bookmarks sidebar. Open the merged file and tap a few links before you send it.

Two kinds of link in a PDF

When you design a catalog with an 'Order on WhatsApp' button or a link to a product page in your store, the design program saves it as a clickable area on top of the page carrying an outside address. That area is part of the page itself, so it travels with the page, unchanged, into the file Merge PDFs produces.

The second kind is internal: a contents page where tapping 'Perfumes' jumps to page 5. Those links point at a place inside the original document, and the original document no longer exists after merging, so they can end up going nowhere or to the wrong spot. The same goes for bookmarks in the sidebar, which are not carried into the merged file at all.

What this means for your catalog

  • wa.me links, store page links and email links: normally work after merging.
  • A clickable contents page inside one of the sections: test it, and do not rely on it untested.
  • The bookmarks sidebar in the reader: gone, so add printed page numbers if the catalog is long.

A quick test before customers see it

  1. After 'Merge and download', open the file on your phone and not just the computer, because most customers will open it on a phone.
  2. Tap the WhatsApp button on at least one page from each section and check it opens a chat with your number.
  3. Tap one or two product links and make sure they open the right page in your store.
  4. If the catalog has a clickable contents page, tap every entry and check where it lands.

If a contents link does not work, the simplest fix is to make the contents page plain text listing page numbers in the merged file, instead of jump links built for the old file. A customer on a phone can scroll or type the page number.

Common questions

Do all PDF readers treat links the same way?

Not always. Some apps ask for confirmation before opening an outside link. That is why you should test on a phone like your customers' phones.

Does a WhatsApp link inside a scanned image work?

No. A link written inside an image is only a picture, and it was never clickable, even before merging.

Does merging change any link address?

No. Links are copied as they are, and the tool does not edit their addresses.
