The merge tool says the total page count is above the tested limit. How do I combine very long files?
Make two or more volumes instead of one file. [[merge-pdf]] accepts up to 500 pages in each file you add and up to 2000 pages in the merged document, and it checks the total before merging starts. If you are over, divide the list into groups that each stay under the ceiling and merge each group as its own volume.
Two limits, two different messages
- 500 pages per file: shows up as soon as you add the file, with a message naming it and its page count, and the file never enters the list.
- 2000 pages in the merged file: shows up when you press 'Merge and download' and the whole list adds up to more than 2000 pages.
These are tested limits, the sizes the tool is checked against, not arbitrary numbers. The merge happens in your device's memory, and a file of thousands of pages can stall the browser before it finishes, so the limit saves you a long wait that ends in a frozen tab.
Example: a year of reports
Five files of 500, 500, 500, 400 and 300 pages. The total is 2200, so the tool shows the over-limit message and does not start.
Volume one: the first three files, 1500 pages, which the tool accepts.
Volume two: the last two files, 700 pages, also accepted.
How: add the first three files, merge, and name the result volume-1. Then press 'Reset', add the other two files and merge them as volume-2.
A single file over 500 pages?
If one file on its own is longer than 500 pages, Merge PDFs will not take it as an input. Split it first in Split PDF with ranges such as 1-400 and 401-650, then use the parts as ordinary files in the merge, keeping each part within 500 pages.
Volumes beat one giant file
- Someone on a phone opens a 700-page file far faster than a 2200-page one.
- If a file gets damaged in transfer, you lose one volume, not the whole archive.
- Names like volume-1 and volume-2 with the period each covers make things easier to find later.
Common questions
Can I raise the limit somehow?
No. The limit is built in to keep the browser from stalling. Volumes are the answer.
Why didn't the tool warn me before I added everything?
The summary line shows the running page total with every file you add, so keep an eye on it. The final check happens when you press merge.
Are big files slower even under the limit?
Yes, especially on phones. Near the limit, a computer is the more comfortable choice.
