A customer sent me a PDF on WhatsApp with sideways pages. How do I rotate it on my phone and send it back?
Save the document from the chat to your phone's files, open the rotate tool in your browser and choose it there, turn the pages with the buttons, and download the new file, whose name ends in rotated. Share that back in the same chat; the copy you saved stays as it was.
Step one: get the file out of WhatsApp
Your browser cannot reach WhatsApp's files directly, so the first step is saving the document somewhere the browser can see. Open the document in the chat, then use the share button or the save option and pick your Files app or Downloads folder. The wording differs a little between iPhone and Android and between WhatsApp versions, but the idea is the same: a copy of the file in your phone's files.
Step two: rotate the pages
- Open Rotate PDF pages in your phone's browser, tap the file picker, and choose the document from Files or Downloads.
- Wait for the thumbnails. If every page is sideways, leave 'All pages' as it is.
- If only some pages are sideways, tap their thumbnails to select them, and the tool switches to 'Selected pages' by itself.
- Press 'Right 90°' or 'Left 90°' and watch the thumbnails until they are upright.
- Press 'Download rotated PDF'. The new file is saved to your phone's downloads.
A customer sent a 3-page purchase order, and pages 1 and 3 are sideways with their tops pointing left.
You tap pages 1 and 3 and press 'Right 90°', and the summary shows: Pages that will be rotated: 2 of 3, and 90° clockwise: pages 1, 3.
Say the original was named order.pdf; the new file is then named order-rotated.pdf.
Step three: send it back in the chat
In the chat, tap the attach button, choose Document, then pick the new file from your downloads. Make sure you choose the file whose name ends in rotated, not the one you saved in step one, since the two usually sit next to each other in the list. Send it as a document, not as a photo, so the PDF arrives as it is.
Notes for working on a phone
- The file is not uploaded anywhere; the rotation happens entirely inside your phone's browser. That matters when the document holds a customer's details.
- On a large file, drawing the thumbnails can take a while on a phone. The rotation buttons with 'All pages' work before it finishes.
- If the file is password-protected, the tool will refuse it, so ask the customer for an unprotected or corrected copy.
- If you only need to read the file, you need none of this: turning the phone sideways or rotating the view in your reader is enough.
Common questions
Does the file lose quality when I send it back on WhatsApp?
Not if you send it as a document. WhatsApp sends documents as they are, and the tool itself does not recompress the pages.
Do I need a special app to edit PDFs on my phone?
No. The tool works straight from your phone's browser with nothing to install.
