I pressed rotate four times, then download, and it says no page has been rotated. Why?

Because turns add up and wrap around at 360 degrees. Four presses of 'Right 90°' bring the page back to where it started, so there is nothing left to export. The other likely cause is choosing 'Selected pages' without selecting any page. Select pages or choose 'All pages', press the button once, and check the summary.

Cause one: a full turn equals nothing

Each press in Rotate PDF pages adds its angle to whatever is already on that page. Two presses of 'Right 90°' make 180, three make 270, and the fourth completes 360, a full turn that returns the page to its original orientation. The tool does not record 'a full turn' as a change, because it changes nothing, so the page drops off the list of pages to rotate.

Worked example

Page 3 has no rotation. The first press of 'Right 90°' puts +90° on it.

The second press: +180°. The third: +270°.

The fourth: the badge disappears and the summary goes back to 'No page has been rotated yet'. Downloading now shows the message that no page has been rotated.

This usually happens when you press the button and expect to see the change somewhere else, such as a copy open in your PDF reader, while the change shows only on the thumbnail inside the tool. Watch the thumbnail and its badge, which update with every press.

Cause two: no pages in scope

If you choose 'Selected pages' and press a rotation button without selecting a page, nothing rotates, and a message asks you to select at least one page or choose 'All pages'. Ignore it and press download, and you get the message that no page has been rotated, because your press was applied to nothing.

A related case: if you type an invalid range into the pages field, such as a number larger than the file's page count, a note appears under the field and the buttons do nothing until you fix it.

The fix, step by step

  1. If you are unsure what happened, press 'Clear all rotation' to start from a clean state.
  2. Choose 'All pages' if the whole file needs turning, or 'Selected pages' and select pages by clicking or typing their numbers.
  3. Press the right button once and look at the thumbnail.
  4. Read the summary: it should show how many pages will be rotated and the angle for each group.
  5. Press 'Download rotated PDF'.

Avoiding it next time

  • Press once and look, rather than pressing repeatedly.
  • For a full upside-down flip use the '180°' button rather than two presses of 90.
  • To turn left use 'Left 90°' rather than three presses of 'Right 90°'.

Common questions

Does the message mean the file is damaged?

No. It only means there is no pending change to export. The file is fine.

I pressed 90 and then 270 on the same page. What happens?

The total is 360, which is no change, and the page drops out of the summary just as with four presses.
