How do I price products on Shopify when the payment provider takes a percentage plus a fixed amount per transaction?
Put the fixed per-transaction amount in fixed fees and the percentage from your payments plan in the percentage fee field, then the shipping you pay and your margin. A product costing 40 with shipping of 15, a fixed fee of 1, a 2.9% rate and a 25% margin needs a price of 77.67.
Why card fees matter in your own store
A standalone store has no large marketplace commission, so payment fees look small and many sellers ignore them. They come in two parts that behave differently: a percentage that grows with the price, and a fixed amount charged on every transaction whatever its size. The fixed part is what catches out anyone selling low-priced items.
Enter each fee where it belongs
- Check your payments plan page or your provider's invoice and note the percentage and the fixed amount per transaction.
- In the Selling-price calculator, enter the product cost and the shipping you pay per order.
- Put the fixed amount in fixed fees and the percentage in the percentage fee field.
- If your store plan adds a transaction fee for using a third-party provider, add that rate to the gateway rate when it is charged on the same selling price.
- Enter your target margin and read the price.
The cheap product pays more, relatively
Compare two products with identical inputs, the only difference being product cost:
Cost 40: price 77.67, total payment fees 3.25. With no payment fees at all it would be 73.33, so the gateway added 4.34.
Cost 8: price 33.29, total payment fees 1.97. With no payment fees it would be 30.67, so the gateway added 2.62.
The fixed fee of 1 is about 3% of the cheap product's price and under 1.5% of the other.
Put simply, the lower the price, the heavier the fixed fee. If your catalogue is full of low-priced items, bundles or a minimum order value can save a lot of fixed fees, because one order pays the fixed part only once.
What the tool will not work out for you
The tool knows no provider's rates and no monthly subscription plans. The monthly store subscription is not a per-order fee, so do not drop it into fixed fees as it is. If you want the products to carry it, divide it by the orders you expect in a month and add the result. Once the price settles, you can check the resulting margin from the other side with the Profit margin calculator.
Common questions
Is the card fee charged on price plus the shipping the customer pays?
The tool assumes the percentage applies to the selling price alone. If the customer also pays shipping in the same transaction, add the gateway rate on that shipping amount to fixed fees.
Does the currency change anything?
No. The currency menu only changes how amounts are displayed and converts nothing, so enter every amount in your store's currency.
