Why are my split files named like page-01 and page-02, and how do I tell which is which?

The name tells you what is inside: your original file name, then page or pages, then the page number or range. The zero in page-01 is deliberate; it keeps the files in the right order in any folder.

How each name is built

Every output starts with your original file name minus the extension, so if the file is catalog.pdf, every output begins with catalog. Then comes a description of the pages, which depends on the mode:

  • “Every page separately”: catalog-page-01.pdf, catalog-page-02.pdf and so on, where each number is that page's position in the original.
  • “One PDF per range”: the name carries the range, such as catalog-pages-3-5.pdf for pages 3, 4 and 5, or catalog-page-7.pdf for a single-page range.
  • “Extract to one PDF”: the name joins everything you picked with underscores, such as catalog-pages-1-3_5.pdf. If that description would run past 40 characters, the file is simply catalog-extract.pdf.
  • Whenever there is more than one output, everything is packed into a ZIP called catalog-split.zip

Why the leading zero?

Many file managers sort names as text, character by character. Without the zero, page-10 would land before page-2 because the character 1 comes before 2, and your pages would be shuffled. So the tool pads each number to the length of the page count. A 12-page file gives page-01 to page-12, a 400-page file gives page-001 to page-400, and a 9-page file needs no padding at all: page-1 to page-9.

Worked example

scan.pdf, 400 pages, split with “Every page separately”.

The result: 400 files from scan-page-001.pdf to scan-page-400.pdf inside scan-split.zip

scan-page-087.pdf is page 87 of the original, whatever number is printed at its foot.

Making the names clearer for whoever receives them

  1. Before opening the file in Split PDF, rename your original to something descriptive, such as ramadan-catalog instead of document or scan. The original name goes into every output, so fixing it once fixes all of them.
  2. After unpacking the ZIP, rename the files you will send to customers after the product or the client. The number helps you sort; a customer has no idea what page 07 means.
  3. If your original has an Arabic name, the tool keeps it as it is. Just check that the system you upload to accepts non-Latin file names.

The number in the name is not the printed number

The number in the file name is the page's position in the file, counting the cover as page 1. If a report starts its printed numbering after a cover and a contents page, the file named page-05 may show a page printed with 3. That is not a split error, just the gap between physical position and printed label.

Common questions

Can I choose the output names before downloading?

No. Names are built automatically from the original name and the pages. Rename the original before splitting, or rename the outputs afterwards.

Why didn't I get a ZIP?

Because there was only one output, so it downloads directly as a PDF with its descriptive name.
