How do I fit two small receipts on each A4 page of a PDF to save paper?

In two steps. The images to PDF tool puts one image on each page, so first join each pair of receipts side by side into one image with the collage maker, then add those combined images to the converter on A4 with Fit inside. Automatic orientation gives each pair a landscape page, so both receipts stay as large as possible.

Why the tool will not put two images on a page directly

Images to PDF is built on one simple rule: every image becomes a page. That keeps the order obvious and the result predictable, but it does not divide pages into slots. Rather than promise a feature that is not there, we use a second tool that is good at combining images, then hand its output to the converter.

Step one: join each pair into one image

  1. Open the Image collage maker and choose two receipts, older one first.
  2. Choose a grid with 2 columns so the receipts sit side by side.
  3. Set Cell shape to Same as the first image and Cell fit to Contain whole image, so no number or amount is cut off.
  4. Enter an output width of, say, 2000 px, a 40 px gap between images, a 40 px outer margin and a white background.
  5. Download the combined image and repeat for each pair of receipts.

In numbers from the collage maker's layout function: two tall receipts shaped 1 to 2 with these settings give an image of 2000 × 1960 px, with each receipt in a 940 × 1880 px cell.

Step two: turn the pairs into a PDF

Add the combined images to the converter in order, choose A4, Fit inside and a 10 mm margin, and leave orientation on Follow the image. The 2000 × 1960 image is slightly wider than tall, so it gets a landscape page and is drawn 549.58 × 538.59 pt, with each receipt inside it a little over 516 pt tall.

What you give up for the saved paper

To be clear: a receipt on a shared page is smaller. The same 900 × 1800 px receipt placed alone on a portrait A4 page would be drawn 392.6 × 785.2 pt, so on the shared page it is about two thirds of that height. For till receipts with clear print that is usually fine; a receipt with tiny or faded print may be hard to read once printed.

  • Print one test page and check the amount, the date and any tax number are legible.
  • With an odd number of receipts, leave the last one alone, pair it with a blank white image, or add it as a single image at the end of the list.
  • If your accountant wants each receipt on its own page, this method is not for them, so ask before combining.

Does quality survive?

The collage maker redraws the images and saves JPEG at quality 92, or lossless PNG if you choose it. The converter then embeds that output as it is with no further encoding. So any loss happens once, in the combining step, and you can avoid it by choosing PNG there at the cost of a bigger file.

Common questions

Can I put four receipts on a page?

Yes, the same way: four images in 2 columns in the collage. Each receipt gets smaller still, so check readability.

How many pairs can go in one PDF?

Up to 20 combined images, which is 40 receipts in one file.

Why Contain rather than Crop to fill?

Cropping trims the edges of a receipt, and the total or the date may be right at the edge.
