How do I nudge my watermark up a little so it does not cover the product detail near the bottom?

Keep your spot on the grid, then type a negative number in 'Vertical offset'. Negative values lift the mark and positive ones lower it, and 'Horizontal offset' does the same left and right. You cannot drag the mark on the preview, and that is exactly what makes it land in precisely the same place on every photo.

The usual problem

You pick 'Bottom center' because that is where marks usually go, then find it sits on the sole of the shoe, the brand badge on the bag or the size printed on the box. The 3×3 grid only gives you nine spots; the offsets are what let you fine tune between them.

Offsets are measured from the width, not the height

This surprises many people. The vertical offset is a share of the image width, not its height, and so is the margin. The idea is to keep the distance in proportion to the mark itself, whose size is also a share of the width.

Worked example

A 1600 × 1200 photo and a mark with a box of about 480 × 90 at bottom center with a 3% margin: its center sits 1107 px from the top.

With a vertical offset of -5%: the center moves up to 1027, that is 80 px higher, because 5% of a 1600 px width is 80.

With -10%: it moves up to 947, 160 px higher.

On a 1080 × 1350 portrait photo, the same -5% lifts the mark only 54 px, because the width is 1080.

Steps

  1. Open the Image watermark editor tool, choose your photos, then pick 'Single mark'.
  2. Choose the nearest spot on the grid, such as bottom center.
  3. Type a value such as -5 in 'Vertical offset' and watch the preview. Go up or down until the mark clears the important detail.
  4. If it needs to move sideways, use 'Horizontal offset': positive goes right, negative goes left.
  5. Click through the batch with the 'Preview' button, because the detail may sit in a different place on each photo.

When one offset does not suit every photo

The same settings apply to the whole batch. If some products are shot close up with the detail low in the frame and others from further back with it in the middle, split them into two groups: process the first with one offset, press 'Reset' to empty the list, choose the second group and adjust the offset for it. Your other settings stay as they were between the groups.

  • Offsets accept values from -100 to 100.
  • The margin goes up to 25% and pushes the mark away from both edges of its corner at once; an offset moves it in one direction only.
  • If you type a value outside the limits, the preview shows the photo without the mark and downloading is disabled until you fix it.

Common questions

Do positive numbers move it up or down?

Positive moves the mark down and to the right; negative moves it up and to the left.

Can an offset push the mark off the photo?

Yes, if you overdo it, since offsets are not clamped to the image. Always check the preview.

Do offsets work in repeat mode?

No, the offsets and margin are for the single mark only.
