I changed my shop's WhatsApp number; do my old links and printed QR codes update themselves?

No. A wa.me link has the number written inside it, a QR code holds that link as it is, and there is no account or redirect server behind either that could be updated. Every old link keeps opening a chat with the old number. You need to make new links with the new number, replace them everywhere, and reprint the codes.

Why they cannot be updated

Compare two links with two example numbers:

https://wa.me/966501234567

https://wa.me/966559876543

The only difference is the number itself. The WhatsApp link generator does not make a short link that passes through a server and does not save your links to an account; it builds the text inside your browser and its job is done. That is what keeps it private and simple, and it is also what makes a link fixed once published. A printed code is even more fixed: it is ink on paper.

Make the new links

  1. Type the new number in the tool, picking the country code in the helper if the number is local.
  2. If your old links had different messages, such as one per product, recreate them with the same messages. Copy the message out of the old link if you do not have it saved.
  3. Check the 'Number inside the link' line each time; a single wrong digit here gets repeated everywhere.
  4. Open at least one link on your phone and confirm it reaches the new account.

Where old links hide

  • Every social media bio, not just the account you remember.
  • Website buttons and product descriptions, including every product with its own message link.
  • Your email signature, and every staff member's.
  • Ads still running, and pinned posts.
  • Printed QR codes: cards inside orders, stickers on bags, the shop sign, printed receipts.
  • PDFs you sent to customers, such as a catalogue or a quotation, which do not change after sending.

Whatever has been printed and handed out cannot be recalled, like cards already with customers. If you still have the old number, let it keep receiving messages for a transition period and reply from your new number. If you no longer have it, know that anyone scanning those codes will reach whoever holds the old number now.

Avoiding this next time

Pick a dedicated business number you intend to keep for the long term before you print anything. Keep a simple list of every place you put a link or a code, so it is ready on the day you need it. And if you want QR codes in SVG for large prints, make them from the new link with the QR code generator.

Common questions

Can I make the old link redirect to the new number?

Not with this tool. A wa.me link is not a redirect; it carries the number directly, and there is nowhere in the tool to change it after publishing.

Does the tool keep my old links so I can edit them?

No. Numbers and messages are not stored on the site, so keep your own copy of your messages.
