Example

Inputs: Sex = Male, Age = 30 years, Weight = 70 kg, Height = 175 cm, Equation version = Revised (Roza and Shizgal 1984). Result: BMR: 1,696 kcal/day; For comparison: Mifflin-St Jeor: 1,649 kcal/day.

Limits and caveats

  • It tends to run slightly above measured values for many people today.
  • Adults only, and it ignores the split between muscle and fat.

Questions about this tool

What is the difference between the two versions?

Roza and Shizgal refitted the coefficients in 1984 on a wider data set; the results usually differ by only tens of calories.

How do I turn BMR into daily needs?

Multiply it by an activity factor from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (very active), or use the TDEE calculator.

Why is a Mifflin result shown too?

So you can compare. Mifflin-St Jeor is newer and closer to measured values for most adults.
