Mean arterial pressure (MAP) calculator
Enter a blood pressure reading to see the average arterial pressure over a heart cycle, a number doctors watch to judge organ perfusion.

How to use it
- Enter systolic pressure and diastolic pressure.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
MAP = diastolic + (systolic - diastolic) ÷ 3, which equals (systolic + 2 × diastolic) ÷ 3. Pulse pressure = systolic - diastolic.
Example
Inputs: Systolic pressure = 120 mmHg, Diastolic pressure = 80 mmHg. Result: Mean arterial pressure: 93.3 mmHg; Pulse pressure: 40 mmHg.
Limits and caveats
- The one-third rule approximates a normal heart rate and can differ from a value measured by an arterial line.
- An educational estimate that does not replace assessment by a doctor or pharmacist.
Questions about this tool
What is a normal MAP?
Usually about 70 to 100 mmHg. In intensive care, doctors often target 65 mmHg or more.
Why is it not halfway between the two numbers?
The heart spends about two thirds of each cycle in diastole, so the mean sits closer to the diastolic pressure.
What is pulse pressure?
The difference between systolic and diastolic pressure, 40 mmHg for a reading of 120/80.
