Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.
How to use it
- Enter number.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
An additive base-10 system: each power of ten has a sign repeated as many times as that digit (0 to 9), and the value is the sum of the signs. For example 1234 = 1 lotus + 2 rope coils + 3 hobbles + 4 strokes.
Example
Inputs: Number = 2,026. Result: In hieroglyphs: 𓆼𓆼 𓎆𓎆 𓏤𓏤𓏤𓏤𓏤𓏤; Number of signs: 10.
Limits and caveats
- The signs need a font with Egyptian hieroglyphs, such as Noto Sans Egyptian Hieroglyphs, or they show as boxes.
- Signs are written in one line from largest to smallest, while scribes often stacked them in compact rows and columns.
Questions about this tool
Did ancient Egyptians have a zero?
They had no zero sign for writing numbers; an empty place simply gets no sign.
What is the hieroglyph for one million?
A seated man with raised arms, the god Heh, which also meant a countless amount.
Does the order of the signs matter?
Order does not change the value because the system is additive, but scribes put larger signs first in the reading direction.
