How it is calculated
Numbers are read in groups: milliards, millions, mille, then hundreds. 70 is soixante-dix, 80 quatre-vingts and 90 quatre-vingt-dix. Cents and quatre-vingts take an s when multiplied and not followed by another number, and mille never takes an s.
Example
Inputs: Number = 1980, Variant = France (soixante-dix). Result: In French: mille neuf cent quatre-vingts; Belgium and Swiss form: mille neuf cent quatre-vingts.
Limits and caveats
- We use traditional spelling; the 1990 reform links every part with hyphens, such as vingt-et-un, and both are accepted.
- Huitante, used in some Swiss cantons, is not offered. The limit is below one thousand milliards.
Questions about this tool
When does quatre-vingts take an s?
At the end of the number, as in quatre-vingts. It drops the s before another number, such as quatre-vingt-trois, or before mille.
Why vingt et un without hyphens?
In traditional spelling 21, 31 up to 71 use et with no hyphens, while 81 and 91 are quatre-vingt-un and quatre-vingt-onze.
What changes in Belgium and Switzerland?
They say septante for 70 and nonante for 90 instead of soixante-dix and quatre-vingt-dix.
