How to use it

  1. Enter number and add geresh and gershayim marks.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Units א=1 to ט=9, tens י=10 to צ=90, hundreds ק=100, ר=200, ש=300, ת=400 and sums above that (תק=500 to תתק=900). Thousands use a unit letter followed by ׳. 15 = ט״ו and 16 = ט״ז; ״ goes before the last letter, or ׳ after a single letter.

Example

Inputs: Number = 15, Add geresh and gershayim marks = yes. Result: In Hebrew numerals: ט״ו.

Limits and caveats

  • A round thousand such as 5000 is written ה׳ and looks like 5, so add the word אלפים when it could confuse.
  • Only the 15 and 16 rules are applied; other letter pairs some writers avoid are not rearranged.

Questions about this tool

Why is 15 written ט״ו and not י״ה?

Because י״ה spells a form of the divine name, 15 is written as 9 + 6 instead, and 16 as 9 + 7.

What is the difference between ׳ and ״?

Geresh ׳ follows a single letter or the thousands letter; gershayim ״ goes before the last letter of a multi-letter number.

How is the Hebrew year 5786 written?

It is ה׳תשפ״ו, and the thousands letter is often dropped, giving תשפ״ו.
