How it is calculated
The number is split into groups of three digits from the right. Each group is read as hundreds, tens and ones, then its scale word: thousand, million, billion and so on. UK style adds "and" before the tens and ones, and digits after the decimal point are read one by one after "point".
Example
Inputs: Number = 1234, Style = US (one hundred five). Result: In words: one thousand two hundred thirty-four; Formatted number: 1,234.
Limits and caveats
- We use the short scale, so a billion is a thousand million, as in modern English.
- Up to 21 digits before the decimal point; trailing zeros after the point are dropped.
Questions about this tool
What is the difference between US and UK style?
US style writes 125 as one hundred twenty-five, while UK style adds "and": one hundred and twenty-five. Both are correct.
How are decimals written?
Digits after the point are read one at a time after "point", so 3.05 becomes three point zero five.
When do I use a hyphen?
Only between tens and ones from 21 to 99, as in forty-two. There is no hyphen after hundred or thousand.
