How to use it

  1. Enter number in words.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Ones and tens words are added, "hundred" multiplies the running group by 100, and thousand, million, billion or trillion add the group times its scale to the total; scales must decrease. Words after "point" are decimal digits.

Example

Inputs: Number in words = one thousand two hundred thirty-four. Result: Number: 1,234.

one thousand two hundred thirty-four
1234

Limits and caveats

  • Understands English number words up to trillion; ordinals such as first are not read.
  • Digits after "point" are read one by one, as in point two five.

Questions about this tool

Does it understand twelve hundred?

Yes. Twelve hundred means 1200, a common American way to say numbers from 1100 to 9900.

Do "and" or hyphens matter?

No. They are ignored, so one hundred and five and one hundred five both give 105.

Why was my phrase rejected?

Two digits in a row such as five six, or a bigger scale after a smaller one such as thousand million, is not a single valid number.
