How to use it
- Enter octal values.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Each octal value becomes a byte: 145 = 1 × 64 + 4 × 8 + 5 = 101 (the letter e), then the bytes are decoded as UTF-8.
Example
Result: Decoded text: Hi; Characters: 2; Bytes: 2.
Limits and caveats
- Joined strings are split every 3 digits, so separate shorter values with spaces.
- The largest value accepted is 377, which equals 255.
Questions about this tool
Why are 8 and 9 rejected?
Octal uses only the digits 0 to 7.
Can I write 12 instead of 012?
Yes when values are separated by spaces. Leading zeros are optional.
Why does it say a value is too large?
A byte cannot exceed 255, which is 377 in octal, so 400 is out of range.
