How to use it
- Enter weight, burned body surface and factor (ml/kg/%).
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Total for 24 hours = factor (4 mL in Parkland) × weight (kg) × burned area %. Half in the first 8 hours from injury, the other half over 16 hours.
Example
Inputs: Weight = 70 kg, Burned body surface = 30 %, Factor (mL/kg/%) = 4. Result: Total for the first 24 hours: 8,400 mL; First 8 hours: 4,200 mL; Rate for the first 8 hours: 525 mL/h.
Limits and caveats
- The burned area counts only partial and full thickness burns.
- The first 8 hours start at the time of injury, not arrival, and fluid is adjusted to urine output.
- An educational estimate that does not replace assessment by a doctor or pharmacist.
Questions about this tool
Should I include superficial burns?
No. First degree burns that only cause redness are not counted in the area.
Which factor should I use?
The original Parkland uses 4 mL; newer guidance starts adults between 2 and 4 mL, so the factor is editable.
Which fluid is it for?
The formula is usually applied to lactated Ringer solution.
