How to use it
- Enter holdings (amount then return %, one per line).
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Weighted return = sum of (holding value × its return) ÷ total value. Weight = holding value ÷ portfolio total.
Example
Result: Portfolio weighted return: 6.2%; Total portfolio value: 10,000.00; Total gain or loss: 620.00.
Limits and caveats
- It gives a single-period return and ignores deposits or withdrawals during the period.
- Use each holding's value at the start of the period so the weights are right.
Questions about this tool
What does contribution mean in the table?
It is how many percentage points the holding added to the portfolio return, equal to its weight times its return. The contributions add up to the portfolio return.
Should I use current value or purchase value?
Use each holding's value at the start of the period you are measuring, such as the start of the year, with its return over that period.
How do I type a negative return?
Put a minus sign before the number, such as -4 for a 4% loss. The % sign is optional.
