How to use it

  1. Enter length, width, compacted thickness, compacted density and price per tonne (optional).
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Volume = length × width × (thickness ÷ 100). Tonnes = volume × compacted density (2.35 t/m³ by default). One short ton = 907.18474 kg.

Example

Inputs: Length = 20 m, Width = 5 m, Compacted thickness = 5 cm, Compacted density = 2.35 t/m³. Result: Asphalt needed: 11.75 t; Area: 100 m²; Volume: 5 m³.

Limits and caveats

  • The default density is an average for compacted hot mix; the real value is in the plant or lab report.
  • The aggregate base and prime or tack coat are not included.

Questions about this tool

How much asphalt for 100 m² at 5 cm?

That is 5 m³, and at 2.35 t/m³ you need about 11.75 tonnes.

Why enter the compacted thickness?

Hot mix squeezes down under the roller, and the density used here is for the compacted layer, so the thickness must match.

How thick is a typical home driveway?

Usually 5 to 7.5 cm over a good aggregate base; areas used by trucks need more.
