Will landscape or rotated pages in my PDF come out sideways as images?
No. Each page is measured with its stored rotation already applied, so a landscape A4 page at 150 DPI comes out as a 1754 × 1241 px image, wider than tall, exactly as it looks on screen. If a page looks sideways in your PDF reader too, fix it with the rotate tool first and then convert.
Two ways a page can be landscape
A PDF can make a page landscape in two ways. The page may simply be drawn wider than it is tall, like a spreadsheet exported in landscape. Or it may be a portrait page carrying a setting that says: turn me 90 degrees when displayed. Your reader applies that setting, so you see landscape; some converters ignore it and hand you the page on its side.
PDF to images reads that setting for every page. For a quarter turn or three quarters, width and height are swapped before the size is worked out, and the page is drawn with the same rotation. So the size line you see before converting is already correct.
A portrait A4 page at 150 DPI: 1241 × 1754 px.
A landscape A4 page, made either way, at 150 DPI: 1754 × 1241 px.
If your file mixes portrait and landscape pages, you will see two size lines, one per group.
Sideways in your reader too?
That is a different case. It usually happens with scans: the sheet went into the scanner sideways, the page was saved with its text on its side, and the file has no idea anything is wrong. The tool draws the page as the file has it, so the image will be sideways exactly as you see it.
- Open the file in Rotate PDF pages and select only the sideways pages.
- Turn them 90 degrees the right way and download the new file.
- Open the corrected file in the converter and check in the size line that the pages now have the orientation you want.
- Convert and download.
Why not just rotate the images afterwards? You can, but fixing the file once fixes the page for everything that follows: printing, sending and converting again.
Upside down pages
A page that shows upside down in your reader comes out upside down in the image as well, and the cure is the same: a 180 degree turn in the rotate tool. In that case the pixel size does not change, only which way up the picture is.
Common questions
Do landscape pages use more memory?
No. The pixel count is the same; width and height simply trade places.
My landscape and portrait pages have different pixel sizes. Is that wrong?
No, that is expected. Each page gets its own pixel size according to its orientation.
Does the converter change my original file?
No. The original is never modified; only images are produced.
