I received a password-protected PDF with sideways pages. Can the rotate tool fix it?

Not while it is protected. Password-protected and encrypted files are refused, and the tool never bypasses protection. Ask the sender for a corrected or unprotected copy, or if you are allowed to, save an unprotected copy from your reader and rotate that. If you only need to read it, turning the view in your reader is enough, with no editing at all.

Why the tool refuses the file

Rotation in Rotate PDF pages is saved inside the file, which means the tool has to open the file, edit it and save it again. An encrypted file cannot be edited without decrypting it, and the tool does not do that. So when you choose it, a message says it is password-protected or encrypted and that the tool does not bypass protection, and its pages do not open.

Some files open for reading without a password but are encrypted with restrictions on editing or printing. Those are refused too, because the refusal follows the encryption, not whether a password is asked for when opening.

What you do next depends on your goal: do you only want to read the file, or do you need an upright copy to keep or send?

You only need to read it

Do not edit anything. Almost every PDF reader has a command to rotate the view, which turns the page on screen without saving anything into the file. The protection stays, the file stays as it is, and you read the page upright. It is the fastest and safest answer.

You need an upright copy to send or print

  1. If the file came from a customer or supplier, ask them for a corrected copy. It is their file, and fixing it at the source is better.
  2. If the file is yours and you are allowed to save a copy, open it with the password in your reader and save an unprotected copy, for example by printing to PDF.
  3. Open the unprotected copy in the tool, select the sideways pages, rotate them and download the file.
  4. If the final file needs protection, add a password with your own software after rotating, since the tool does not add protection.
Worked example

A 4-page password-protected file where pages 3 and 4 are sideways tables that need a counter-clockwise turn.

After saving an unprotected copy, you select 3 and 4 and press 'Left 90°', and the summary shows: 270° clockwise: pages 3-4.

What not to do

  • Do not use tools that 'crack' protection without the password on a file you have no right to edit.
  • Do not keep the unprotected copy in a shared folder or send it to anyone else. It is no longer locked.
  • Do not replace the protected original with the rotated copy; keep it as you received it.

Common questions

Is the password or the file sent to any server?

No. The tool never asks for the password, and all processing of unprotected files happens in your browser.

Does the rotated copy keep the original restrictions?

No. It is built from the unprotected copy you saved, so it carries no password and no restrictions.
