Splitting every page of a 400-page scan on my phone stalls. What should I do instead?

Splitting every page means your phone builds 400 PDFs and then zips them, all inside the browser's memory. Instead, extract only the ranges you actually need, split in smaller rounds, or run the job on a computer.

Why this is hard on a phone in particular

Splitting runs inside your browser, not on a server. In “Every page separately” the browser builds a new file for each page and holds them all in memory until it can pack them into one ZIP. Resources shared between pages, such as fonts, are copied into every output. In a scanned file each page is already a large image, so the total is a lot to ask of a phone that is also running other apps. A mobile browser may slow right down or reload the page to protect itself.

The tested limits are one file up to 100 MB and 500 pages, so your file is within them. A limit is not a promise that every device handles the heaviest mode at the same speed.

Option one: extract only what you need

Ask yourself whether you really need 400 separate files. Usually you want one month of receipts or one client's contract. Choose “One PDF per range” and type only those ranges, and the phone builds far fewer files.

Option two: split in rounds

  1. Open Split PDF and choose the file.
  2. Choose “One PDF per range” and type 1-100, 101-200 to get two large parts in a ZIP.
  3. Repeat with 201-300, 301-400 for the second half.
  4. If you then need every page on its own, open each 100-page part by itself and choose “Every page separately”. Working on 100 pages at a time is much lighter on memory.
Worked example

scan.pdf, 400 pages.

“Every page separately” in one go: 400 files, scan-page-001.pdf to scan-page-400.pdf, in one ZIP.

In rounds: 1-100, 101-200 gives scan-pages-1-100.pdf and scan-pages-101-200.pdf, 100 pages each.

Option three: a computer

If you need every page separated in one session, a computer is the better place because it usually has more memory. Open the same tool in a desktop browser; there is nothing to install.

While splitting on any device

  • Close other heavy tabs and apps before you start.
  • Wait for the progress bar to finish and stay on the page, since some phones pause pages in the background.
  • The outputs together can be larger than the original because shared resources are copied into each file, so make sure your phone has room.

Common questions

Did I lose anything when the browser stalled?

No. Your original file is never changed. Reopen the tool and try a smaller round.

Is a scanned file heavier than one exported from Word?

Usually, yes. Each scanned page is an image, while an exported page is text and fonts, which are lighter.
