I extracted pages from a fillable form and the boxes can no longer be typed in. Why?

Because interactive form fields are not carried into the files a split creates. Fill the form first in your PDF reader, save a flattened copy, for example with Print to PDF, and split that copy instead.

What is going on inside the file

In a fillable form, such as a supplier registration or a warranty claim, the boxes are not just drawn on the page. A layer defined for the whole document says there is a text field with a given name here and a checkbox there, and links each field to its spot on a page. That layer belongs to the document as a whole, not to any single page.

The split tool builds a new file and copies the pages into it with their size, rotation and annotations, but the document-level form layer does not come along. The frames may still be visible, yet clicking them opens nowhere to type, and values you entered earlier may not show the way you expected.

The right order: fill, flatten, then split

  1. Open the form in a PDF reader on your device and fill every field on the pages you plan to extract.
  2. Save a flattened copy: print it and choose Save as PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF, depending on your system. That turns what you typed into part of the page content.
  3. Open the flattened copy, not the original, in Split PDF.
  4. Choose “Extract to one PDF” and type the pages you need, for example 2-3 for the two supplier-details pages of a 6-page form.
  5. Open the output and check that everything you typed is visible before sending it.

What if the recipient is the one who should fill it in?

If you want to send a customer or supplier two blank pages to complete themselves, extraction will not give them working boxes. Send the full original form and tell them which pages are theirs, or ask whoever designed the form for a shorter fillable version.

Other things that do not travel with the pages

  • Bookmarks, the outline you see in your PDF reader's sidebar.
  • Document metadata such as the title and author.
  • A digital signature, which is not valid in the output files.

What does stay is whatever is drawn on the page itself: text, images and tables, plus comments and highlights added to the page.

Common questions

Does Print to PDF lower the quality of the form?

Results depend on your system and default printer settings. Open the flattened copy and compare it with the original before splitting, and always keep the original.

Is the original form affected by splitting?

No. The tool only reads the file, so the original's fields stay fillable.
