Splitting gave me a ZIP on my phone and I can't open it. What now?
A ZIP is just a container holding the PDFs the split produced. On iPhone, tap it in the Files app and it unpacks into a folder; on Android, open it from your file manager and choose extract. And if you only need one file, you can avoid the ZIP altogether.
Why you got a ZIP in the first place
The tool only gives you a ZIP when the result is more than one PDF, because mobile browsers handle dozens of simultaneous downloads badly: they ask permission for each file or silently drop some. One ZIP guarantees every file arrives complete. It happens in two cases: always in “Every page separately”, and in “One PDF per range” with two or more ranges.
a.pdf, 30 pages, in “One PDF per range”.
Typing just 1-10: one file, a-pages-1-10.pdf, downloaded directly with no ZIP.
Typing 1-3, 4-6: two files inside a-split.zip
Unpacking on iPhone
- After downloading, open the Files app and go to Downloads, or tap the file in Safari's downloads list.
- Tap the ZIP once. The system creates a folder with the same name next to it, holding the PDFs.
- Open the folder; from there you can share any file to WhatsApp or email directly.
Unpacking on Android
- Open your phone's file app, such as Files by Google or the manufacturer's file manager, and go to Downloads.
- Tap the ZIP. The app shows what is inside, with an Extract or Unzip button.
- Tap it, choose where to save, then open the new folder to find the PDFs.
Button names vary a little between phones and versions, but the idea is the same: open the file from your file app, not from a chat app or the photo gallery.
If you want a single PDF with no ZIP
- Choose “Extract to one PDF” in Split PDF. That mode always gives exactly one PDF, however many ranges you type.
- Or, in “One PDF per range”, type one range only, then repeat for the next one.
- The preview line under the field tells you before you press anything: one PDF means no ZIP, while a ZIP with several files means you will need to unpack it.
Common questions
Do I need a special app to unzip?
Usually not. The iPhone Files app and most Android file managers unpack ZIPs without anything extra.
Should I send the ZIP to a customer as it is?
You can, but a customer on a phone will face the same question. It is kinder to send the PDF they need after unpacking.
