I pasted my store address www.mystore.com into the UTM builder and it was rejected. What is wrong?
www.mystore.com is missing its beginning: https://. The builder needs a full URL starting with https:// or http://, because without it the text is not a complete link, and the tool does not guess the protocol so it never builds a link that might not open. Copy the address from your browser's address bar while you are on your store's page, since that always includes https://, and paste it instead of typing.
Why the tool does not add https:// itself
Because that would be a guess. Some sites run only on https, some older ones on http, and some answer at an address with www and another without. If the tool added what it thought was right, you might get a link that looks fine but opens an error page or goes through a redirect that loses part of the URL. The builder does not visit the link or check that the page works, so the only safe way is for you to give it the full address you know works.
The error messages and what they mean
We tried several common forms in the UTM campaign link builder; here is how each one went:
- www.mystore.com: rejected, because the URL is not complete and does not start with https://. The message asks for a full URL such as https://example.com/page.
- mystore.com/oud: rejected for the same reason, even with a path.
- htps://mystore.com: rejected with a different message, because the tool reads htps: as an unknown protocol and accepts only http and https.
- https:/mystore.com/oud: rejected as not a valid URL; the cause is one slash instead of two after https:.
- ftp://mystore.com: rejected because the protocol is neither http nor https.
- https://mystore.com/oud: accepted, and the other fields are ready to use.
The right way to grab the address
- Open the page you want visitors to land on in your browser, such as a product or category page.
- Click the address bar once so the full URL shows. Some browsers hide https:// on display but include it when you copy.
- Copy it and paste it into the Base URL field.
- On a phone, use the share button and then Copy, which copies the full address.
Similar mistakes
- Pasting a link from your store's admin panel instead of the public page. Visitors cannot open the admin panel, so check the link works while you are logged out.
- A space at the start or end when pasting. That does no harm; the tool ignores spaces at both ends.
- A URL with a space or Arabic letters in the path, such as an Arabic product title. That is usually accepted, but short, tidy URLs are easier to share. To build a clean path for new pages, use the URL slug generator.
Once the URL is accepted, open the final link once on your phone before publishing. That one step catches any problem with the original address that the tool had no way of knowing about.
Common questions
Should I write http or https?
Whatever the browser shows when your page is open. Most stores today run on https, and copying from the address bar settles it.
Does the tool open the URL to check it?
No. It only checks the format; it does not visit the page or know whether it exists.
