  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.

How it is calculated

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m) squared. The healthy band runs from 18.5 to under 25.

Example

Inputs: Weight = 70 kg, Height = 175 cm. Result: BMI: 22.9 kg/m²; Category: Healthy weight; Lowest healthy weight for your height: 56.7 kg.

Limits and caveats

  • BMI does not separate muscle from fat, so a muscular athlete can show as overweight.
  • The scale is for adults 18 and over; children need age and sex growth charts.

Questions about this tool

What is a normal BMI?

The WHO treats 18.5 to 24.9 as healthy for adults, under 18.5 as underweight, 25 and above as overweight and 30 and above as obesity.

Is BMI different for men and women?

No. Adults of both sexes use the same formula and the same bands.

Why is my BMI high when I am fit?

BMI only looks at total weight, and muscle is dense. A waist measurement or a body fat estimate tells you more.
