How to use it

  1. Enter car a consumption, car b consumption, distance per year, price per liter and years of ownership.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Yearly cost = annual km ÷ 100 × consumption × price per liter for each car. Yearly saving = car A cost − car B cost; total saving = yearly saving × years.

Example

Inputs: Car A consumption = 10 L/100 km, Car B consumption = 6.5 L/100 km, Distance per year = 20,000 km, Price per liter = 2.33, Years of ownership = 5 years. Result: Cost difference over ownership: 8,155.00; Cost difference per year: 1,631.00; Car A yearly fuel cost: 4,660.00.

Limits and caveats

  • It assumes the fuel price stays the same for the whole period, which it may not.
  • A negative difference means car B costs more in fuel than car A.

Questions about this tool

Does it include insurance and servicing?

No, fuel only. Servicing, insurance and depreciation differ between cars and need separate figures.

Where do I get consumption figures?

Use official figures for a like-for-like comparison, or your measured figure for your car against the official one plus a margin for the new car.

What if the two cars use different fuels?

This version uses one price per liter; for different fuels, work out each car with the trip fuel cost calculator at its own price.
