How it is calculated
Steps = distance in meters ÷ (step length in cm ÷ 100), with 1 mile = 1609.344 m. The result is rounded to the nearest step.
Example
Inputs: Distance = 5, Unit = Kilometers, Step length = 70 cm. Result: Number of steps: 7,143; Steps per kilometer: 1,429; Steps per mile: 2,299.
Limits and caveats
- It assumes a constant step length, while steps get longer when you walk fast or run.
- The result is rounded to the nearest step.

How many steps are in a kilometer?
About 1,333 steps with a 75 cm step, and about 1,538 with a 65 cm step.
How many steps are in a mile?
About 2,146 steps with a 75 cm step, and about 2,012 with an 80 cm step.
Is the step count the same for running?
No. Running steps are usually longer, so the same distance takes fewer steps. Measure your running step and enter it.
