How it is calculated

Fidyah = days × cost of feeding one poor person for a day. Total food = days × food per day.

Limits and caveats

  • Fidyah is for permanent inability; someone expected to recover makes up the days instead.
  • The daily food amount differs by school (a mudd or half a sa); paying cash is allowed by the Hanafi school.

Questions about this tool

Who pays fidyah?

An elderly person unable to fast, or someone with an illness not expected to heal, instead of fasting.

What about pregnant or nursing women?

Scholars differ: some require making up the days only, others add fidyah if they broke the fast out of fear for the child.

Can it be paid at once?

Yes. You may feed the poor for all the days at the end of the month or day by day.
