How it is calculated
Digits: 2=ء (أ at word start), 3=ع, 3'=غ, 5=خ, 6=ط, 7=ح, 8=ق, 9=ص. Pairs: sh=ش, kh=خ, gh=غ, th=ث, dh=ذ. Vowels: a, e and o inside a word are dropped, i=ي, u=و, aa=ا, ee=ي, oo=و. At the end of a word a=ا and e=ه. el or al before a word becomes «ال» joined to it.
Example
Result: Arabic text: مرحبا، كيفك يا حبيبي؟.
mar7aba, kifak ya 7abibi?
مرحبا، كيفك يا حبيبي؟
Limits and caveats
- Franco has no single way to write vowels, so some words need a manual fix, for example salam gives «سلم».
- Double a long vowel (aa, ee, oo) to get ا, ي and و.
Questions about this tool
What do 3 and 7 mean in Franco?
3 stands for ع and 7 for ح because the shapes look alike; 5 is خ, 2 is the hamza and 9 is ص.
Why are short vowels dropped?
Arabic does not write short a or e as letters. We drop a, e and o inside a word and write i as ي and u as و because they usually mark a long vowel.
Does it understand dialects?
The same rules apply to every dialect. It changes the script only and does not translate meaning.
