How it is calculated
Add: VAT = amount × 19 ÷ 100 and total = amount × 1.19. Remove from an inclusive price: amount before VAT = total ÷ 1.19 and VAT = total × 19 ÷ 119.
Example
Inputs: Amount = 100 EUR, Calculation = Add VAT to the amount, VAT rate = 19 %. Result: Total including VAT: 119.00 EUR; Amount before VAT: 100.00 EUR; VAT amount: 19.00 EUR.
Limits and caveats
- The default 19% is the standard rate in the German VAT Act (UStG) as published by the Federal Ministry of Finance.
- The reduced 7% applies to items such as most food and books, so change the rate when needed.
