How to use it

  1. Enter numerator and denominator.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Whole part = numerator ÷ denominator without the remainder; remaining fraction = remainder / denominator

Example

Inputs: Numerator = 7, Denominator = 3. Result: Mixed number: 2 1/3; Whole part: 2; Decimal: 2.3333333333.

Limits and caveats

  • For negative values the sign applies to the whole number, so -2 1/3 means -(2 + 1/3).

Questions about this tool

How do I turn 7/3 into a mixed number?

Divide 7 by 3 to get 2 remainder 1, so the mixed number is 2 1/3.

Why does 10/4 give 2 1/2 rather than 2 2/4?

The tool reduces the fraction to 5/2 first, so the remaining fraction is 1/2.

What if the numerator is smaller than the denominator?

The whole part is zero and the fraction stays as it is after reducing, such as 3/5.
